THE CHAMBERMAID
(LA CAMARISTA)

Friday, October 11, 2019
5pm

In her feature debut, theater director Lila Avilés turns the monotonous work day of Eve (Gabriela Cartol), a chambermaid at a high-end Mexico City hotel, into a beautifully observed film of rich detail. Set entirely in this alienating environment, with extended scenes taking place in the guest rooms, hallways, and cleaning facilities, this minimalist yet sumptuous movie brings to the fore Eve’s hopes, dreams, and desires. As with Alfonso Cuarón’s ROMA, set in the same city, The Chambermaid salutes the invisible women caretakers who are the hard-working backbone of society

This film is presented in Spanish with English Subtitles.

Aurelio’s (Noé Hernández) son is murdered in broad daylight. Citlali (Daniela Schmidt) abandons her daughter with her abusive father. Aurelio wants the police to do their job and capture his son’s murderers. Citlali needs a legal document to fight for her daughter’s custody. Their quest for justice soon transforms into a need for revenge. Winner of the Best Actor and Best Actress Award as well as the Press Award for Best Film at last year’s Guadalajara Film Festival, Umansky presents a Dantean portrait of a country held hostage by violence and corruption.

MIDNIGHT FAMILY

Sunday, October 13, 2019
3:35 PM

In Mexico City, the government operates fewer than 45 emergency ambulances for a population of 9 million. This has spawned an underground industry of for-profit ambulances often run by people with little or no training or certification.

An exception in this ethically fraught, cutthroat industry, the Ochoa family struggles to keep their financial needs from jeopardizing the people in their care.

When a crackdown by corrupt police pushes the family into greater hardship, they face increasing moral dilemmas even as they continue providing essential emergency medical services.
